Rafeeq - this is a stand alone client rather than the Manager.
Brian - I followed the article regarding clearing out corrupted definitions.. I was unable to delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\20110418.018" (Cannot delete, access denied) but followed the rest of the article.
Still no joy.
In the logs it says:
"Symantec Endpoint Protection is unprotected","COMP","SYSTEM","System","Symantec Endpoint Protection has determined that the virus definitions are missing on this computer. This computer will remain unprotected from viruses until virus definitions are downloaded to this computer.","11/11/2014 4:30:02 PM"

But when I run liveupdate I get no errors:
