  • 1.  SEP 12 Speed up 16 Bit App - But Why?

    Posted Jun 24, 2014 06:49 AM

we have a Legacy app that need to be run on windows 7 .

It is a Client Server application that makes calls to a server over a mapped network drive.

We have noticed that it is very slow unless we install Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Anyone any ideas why this is happening ?

Maybe installing SEP introduces a network layer that handles the client server communications better than the standard windows networking?

We are recommending to our customers to install SEP but there are some clients who may insist in using their own antivirus protection and we need to understand why this happens to fix it if the problem occurs and we cannot install SEP.

Doesn't really make sense unless it removed malware. SEPs job is to protect the system not enhance performance.

No it does not pick up on anything , and if i remove SEP the program returns to a slow speed.

I am convinced it is changing something in the network / config to enhance performance and this is having the side effect of speeding this app up. Maybe it is replacing a Microsoft Network component with one of it s own ??

Anyone come accross anything like this before?

You'd better call support then and have them look into it. I don't know why it would be changing settings especially if its not telling you.

You installed Symantec network threat protection?

run this bindview, do you see symantec firewall listed ? does your app run slow when you uninstall it?

    Hi Al,

To invesitgate issue further we need process monitor logs.

Create two set of logs, Proc mon logs with SEP installed & proc mon logs without SEP installed

Launch the 16 bit application & collect the logs. While collecting logs in both the cases I would suggest launch the application twice. Open the application, navigate through application and close it. Simply do it one more time. It helps to make the comparison.

Logs might get generate GB in size but can be helpful to troubleshoot root cause.
