I've upgraded my mac system to 10.8.5 from snow leopard. I previously was running an SEP 11 version. I uninstalled that version and ran all the cleansweep removal utilities to get SEP 11 off of the system, then upgraded to 10.8.5. Now, I'm trying to install SEP12.1.4 version and I get a message that software is already installed that is incompatible with SEP. I have no other anti-virus software installed. I have gatekeeper set to accept files from any location, so that shouldn't be an issue. I've gone through all of the forums on here and can't seem to locate a similar issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried the latest, 12.1.5? 12.1.4 should but may be best to move to 12.1.5. See this:

I did a little more sleuthing, and explored the console. Alas there was an instance of Macaffee hidden and installed (yet never activated from when the initial OS 10.6 was installed a few years ago). found it under /usr/local/...

removed it and rebooted. install went fine after that. wonder why SEP 11 never caught that? this was another user's system, so I was not actively monitoring their logfiles.

Thanks for the input you guys provided.
