  • 1.  SEP client computers randomly reboot

    Posted Apr 29, 2011 04:00 PM

I'm getting reports from our help desk staff that some SEP client computers (Dell hardware running Windows XP) are randomly rebooting 2 - 3 times a day. When they uninstall the SEP client (v11.0.6), the random reboots stop.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what solution did you find?

Thanks in advance....I am under the gun to resolve this issue.

We've been running various versions of SEP since it was released, on approx 2500 Dell computers with WinXP SP2/3, and have never seen this.  However, we skipped v11.06 and went directly to v11.06a.  11.06a was released pretty quick after 11.06 due to various issues when that version.  Since 11.06a, 3 maintenance patches (MP1, MP2, MP3) have been released.  Rather than uninstalling, have you tried upgrading to any of these to see if that resolves the issue?

Perhaps I should have been more specific. We're running 11.0.6200.754. I don't know how this maps to the versions/mp's you have listed.

From what I can tell, the readme file says we're on v11, RU 6a, MP 2.

In your installation, do you install all components of SEP (AV protection, NTP, PTP (with application/device control)?  I wonder if you only installed the AV component if you would see the same behavior.

Update: one of our help desk guys found Symantec KB article TECH94959 about a conflict with the audio driver in Dell Optiplex 755 and Precision T3400. The solution is to install an updated audio driver released by Dell. We haven't tried it yet, but I'll update this post when we do.

    Is that a W7 machine?

    Remove NTP and try.

Also do you get a BSOD?

No BSOD, and it's occurring on XP machines. An Optiplex 755 has had the updated audio driver installed. I should know no later than Tuesday if that fixes the random reboots.
