SEP client licenses in different country

  • 1.  SEP client licenses in different country

    Hi All,

I am trying to get something clarified, with my resller and Symantec support giving me different answers...

We are UK based, and are setting up a branch office in Singapore. Can we use licenses for SEP that we have purchased through our reseller in the UK on computers we will have in our Singapore office?

Reseller says no, Symantec Support says yes but neither could give anything that actually confirms it in writing.

Yes, you can. As long as you don't go over the total license count you should be fine. License count is not limited to specific countries. It's just for total number of clients irrespective of location.

Yes You can use the same license for a different SEPM\. Just make sure you dont exceed the license count.

    See here:

    About the licensing enforcement rules

    Licensing Symantec Endpoint Protection

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO80778

    Specifically:

    License coverage: sites and domains

A Symantec Endpoint Protection product license is applied to an entire installation regardless of the number of replicated sites or domains that compose the installation. For instance, a license for 100 seats covers a two-site installation where each site has 50 seats.

If you have not implemented replication, you may deploy the same .slf file to multiple Symantec Endpoint Protection management servers. The number of clients reporting to your management servers must not exceed the total number of licensed seats.

thanks, that really only relates to quantity of licenses and spreading them. I was hoping there might be something that actually mentions countries/regions.

    Hi,

A Symantec Endpoint Protection product license is applied to an entire installation regardless of the number of replicated sites or domains that compose the installation.

Replication sites can be at 10 differernt countries. There is no such limitation.

For instance, a license for 100 seats covers a two-site installation where each site has 50 seats.

You can use UK license file for Singapore machine also.

If you have not implemented replication, you may deploy the same .slf file to multiple Symantec Endpoint Protection management servers. The number of clients reporting to your management servers must not exceed the total number of licensed seats.

Though it's not specifically mentioned I will try to check with the concern team whether we can make statement more precise.

There won't because it doesn't matter the country. It only matters the total count.

Chetan - thanks it would be good to have something in b&w as part of the documentation so it's more clear.

    Dear itsupport,

this is more a legal matter, the technical support can give only technical advices.

From a pure technical perspective, the product does not need to know where you have bought the license. That is, you can technically use X licenses for maximum X seats regardless where you buy the licenses and where you use them. We see this done by every international customer.

From a practical point of view, if you are going to have two stand-alone SEP Managers in the two sites (UK and Singapore), each of them will have its own seats counter, thus you won't be able to ensure you are not over-deploying the product.

If you still need a legal opinion (not a technical/personal opinion), you should contact our Customer Care and ask for licensing assistance.

Thanks Giuseppe, as I stated in the first post I have already contacted Symantec (Customer Care), they said it was ok but couldn't provide anything in writing - which is why I came here to see if anyone knows of documentation that clarifies it either way.

The computers in Singapore would connect to the SEPM in UK office for their updates, so only 1 site to manage from that respect.
