    I'd first start by runnning the SymDIag tool on it to see what it detects.

    You mean that there might a be a similar or different AV installed?

    SymDiag would also be able to the check the system to ensure it meets installation requirements.

    Per the error message the obvious question to me is "Does the machine have Internet access?" I'm assuming that it does, correct?

    PC does have internet.

    If you attempted this installation on Friday last week, you were undoubtedly affected by the DDOS at DYN, as were significant others.

    Retry the installation now (if necessary, remove any Symantec components that were installed).

    If you get the same error message, do as Brian has suggested and run the SymDiag utility.
