Hi Everyone,

We are planning to test the performance of SEPM 12.1 as a guest on virtual platform. However my main concerne is, will it perform as good as or better than the physical box when it comes to supporting more than 9000 clients. we have gone through SEPM 12.1 implementation guide and many other TECHIDs on symantec connect that says it can be done and it does well. But we are more interested in getting to know from the tech-guys about the experiances and findings if anyone has done it

It would be really great if anyone can share there experiances. Suggestions are most welcome.

make sure the hardspecs meet more than what is recommended.is sql DB? is it going to be on virtual ?

Yes Pete. We are using MS-SQL.. We may put on VM or keet it on SAN..

As long as you meet or exceed the hardware specifications for the SEPM, you should not have any issues.

Currently, I have 10,000+ clients running on a SEPM VM and performance has not been a problem.

I'm also running another SEPM VM (1,000+ clients) with the minimum requirements. No issues as well.

Do make sure you follow best practices. And continue to sift thru KB articles and whitepapers for the best guidance.

as mentioned SEPM on VM  with good hardware specs should be able to take care of performance.

@Brian81: what product your are using as a virtualization platform?? Also can you suggest whether is it feasible to put MS-SQL for such large requirement on VM or should we go for SQL cluster???

We may use Hyper-V as a platform...

SQL cluster is on MS end. MS SQL on virtual , again it should be above the recommended hardware specification.

You can improve the performance with the help of SEP 12.1 features.

SEP 12.1 has many new features.

It supports advance virtualization support with the help of following features.

1) Virtual Image Exception – Allows to exclude all the files on a baseline image from scanning.

2) Shared Insight Cache – A stand alone server that enables clients to share scan results.  This allows clients to skip scanning files that have already been scanned by another client.

3) Virtual Client Tagging – Makes the clients virtualization aware and sends back the hypervisor vendor to SEPM.  That data can be used in client searching and reporting.

4) Offline Image Scanner – A stand alone tool to scan offline VMware image (VMDK )files.

Our SQL box is also virtualised. No cluster.
