  • 1.  SEPM database offline affect installs

    Posted Dec 02, 2009 04:01 PM
hello I am at a client that has a issue with there database beeing offline. They believe they have resolved but they are pushing the client out to thousands of users upgrade from ru4 to ru5 and the question was aksed for any reason the database is offline will this affect the installs on teh clients. I did not think so but wanted to throw it to the group

they also said that when teh database has gone down they have to reboot the sepm to get back in

    thanks guys

When you assign the packages to the groups.
In the next heartbeat when the client will update the policy it will download the patch from SEPM then do everything locally.

So if the database goes down before the client has received the policy and Mr5 patch it won't update.
However if it is after that it will update.

So if it is down and they install and still down for the next heartbeat but then comes back up will it then get its update then?

when you do the client install  (msi package or single exe )
the client package wil have information about the management server
once the installtion is complete the clients will try connecting to the manger using the information in the sylink.xml file
once the package is created even if the entire sepm server is down the package can stil be installed on clients
however for them to report and display in the SEPM console it  should be up and running.
heart beat is a continious procedure, it would keep checking the manger specified in the sylink.xml file in a specified interval ( 5 min is default)
smc.exe is the process responsible for this process

in the subsequent heartbeat the client wil get connected to the manager when its up and running

You are correct... smc.exe will constantly try polling the manager for updates based on heartbeat interval.
once its able to connect it will download the latest defs and policy from the manager without any issues.

Thats is right. If you are exporting a package it doesn't matter if Database is online or not. As they Database will come online client will connect to SEPM and download defs n policies.
