unknown issue on a client's machine is causing smcgui.exe to crash repeatedly. returning the following error in the event log.

Faulting application smcgui.exe, version 11.0.5002.301, faulting module atl80.dll, version 8.0.50727.4053, fault address 0x000058fe.

have tried a regular removal and reinstall as well as using the CleanWipe utilitiy with no change. Upon reinstall it begins to crash almost immediatly, but it will still recive definitions updates.

many client machines are running the current version, but so far only this one machine is having the issue.

The faulting module pointed out is the  version of ATL80.dll as well. Can you please upgrade this dll to the latest version and then check for the smcgui functionality.

    Thanks for the quick response.

Can you provide instructions on how to upgrade the .dll. I am unfamiliar with the process.

You can try to disable the Application Control for SEP client.

You first need to determine the application which is using the dll, then find out the companys official website and then that's the place where you would get the correct version.

The out-of-date .dll was located in the C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS folder. I was able to replace it with the 8.0.50727.762 version in the Symantec Cached Installs folder. After a restart, I no loger got the error message and SEP was operating normally on the clients machine.

Thanks so much for your help. This machine is located in a remote office and I spent the better part of the weekend trying to get it working.
