    Just got off the phonewith Syamnetc support. We're using a VM Ware Bightmail Gateway v8.03-11.

    I was wondering if there was a way to view logs of smtp conversations with external servers. They said 'No'.
    That seems strange to me. Is there no way to monitor smtp connections?

    You can use tcpdump using the support account to view smtp conversations.

    Are you experiencing some issue that you need to monitor smtp connections for?  You would monitor smtp conversations to troubleshoot mail delivery or receipt issue and most likely when working with support that's why the tcpdump command is available under support account.  Support should be able to help you with the tcpdump command as mentioned in the following KB article:

    For normal monitoring of messages, Message Audit Logs should be sufficient.
