  • 1.  Software delivery package shows as disabled after scheduling

    Posted Oct 15, 2015 10:06 AM

I just distributed a patch last night and when I go to check my clients through RAAD many of them show the package as being disabled and the delivery task as being enabled under the SWD tab. The policy is set to install immediately, but when selecting the delivery task and looking in the Program Details pane the Run ASAP parameter reads No. The policy also shows up under the Policies tab in RAAD and under the Patch tab the status shows as Update Scheduled so I'm not sure what's going on here. I know the majority of the computers in my company require this patch based on compliance reports so I'm wondering why this package would show as disabled and the Run ASAP parameter read No after scheduling it for immediate installation. I've attached screenshots from RAAD, logs from when the policy was downloaded yesterday, and logs from today when I ran a check for tasks on the client. Any help is appreciated.

I think your problem might be to do with this line in your log: "<event date='10/14/2015 09:30:59.9390000 -04:00' severity='1' hostName='COMPUTER7' source='SoftwareUpdateAgent' module='PatchMgmtAgents.dll' process='AeXNSAgent.exe' pid='2784' thread='3112' tickCount='49997275' > </event>" Did you use the default "Software Update Plug-in Install" policy or clone it?

I used the default Software Update Plug-in Install.

    I meant to put this line in from the log: event date='10/14/2015 14:18:56.0580000 -04:00' severity='1' hostName='COMPUTER7' source='SoftwareUpdateAgent' module='PatchMgmtAgents.dll' process='AeXNSAgent.exe' pid='2784' thread='3112' tickCount='67273013' > </event

Thanks for clarifying Andy. What about that line sticks out to you? The timing of that event was approximately 15 minutes after I scheduled the patch.

Sorry, it still didn't come out fully, it's a severity 1 message, i.e. Error and read: "Unexpected empty path of Patch Install Tools Package package." This suggests to me that your Patch Management plug-in install hasn't run correctly - it's actually more than one install. If you look at the Symantec Management Agent and select "Show expired..." and "Show internal..." you should see a "Patch Install Tools" package. Open it and see if you can see any clues as to why it's showing an error. On my PCs it's grey, shows as "Disabled" in the Summary tab, the Details tab shows the GUID they should be found under but doesn't have a command line, the Download Histroy tab shows the history but no Source location anymore and the Run History tab doesn't show anything.

To build on this a little further the patch has installed on 48 computers, all of which appear to be laptops. However, these aren't ALL of the laptops in our company, maybe 2/3 of the total active laptops. At this point it's been too long for me to go look at logs from the day the patch was scheduled. Based on the line that was picked out above it looks like the "severity='1'" could be my problem here, assuming that 1 is the lowest priority, but why would this have been set to '1'?

Thanks for the reply back Andy, I hadn't refreshed my page so I didn't see this response about the severity=1 error. I'll take a look at the sections you mentioned and see if I can figure out why this is happening.

Severity 1 is the highest priority: 1 Error 2 Warning 4 Informational You need to work through what's going wrong with your Patch Install Tools package.
