We are trying to use the WinPE environment for ghosting because we have run into problems with performance on some of our newer HP Laptops with the Broadcom NIC under DOS.

We have the WinPE environment constructed and can boot to it. I have Ghost32 included on the CD and can run Ghost from the WinPE environment on the machine. Networking is good. In fact everything looks good right up to the "Proceed with Image creation" point. After confirming I get a message:

"A source volume could not be locked as it is in use by another process. Do you with to force a dismount on the volume? ALL OPEN HANDEL TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID"

You can't force the dismount, it fails so we are dead in the water.

My first thought was that WinPE was creating a paging file so I set that to 0 in the winbom.sif file, rebuit the WinPE image and got the same results. It sounds like others are having success using Ghost from WinPE.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Any tips, whitepapers, articles etc. on using WinPE and Ghost would also be welcomed

    Thanks,

    Hi Marshall,

Which version of windows did you use to build your WinPE?
Also, what is the OS you are trying to take an image of?

Are you doing a disk or partition create operation?
Oh yeah, and what is the version of Ghost32 you are running?

To try and figure out what is causing Ghost32 to be unable to lock the volume, you can run the tool "Process Explorer" from www.sysinternals.com. This can be done by doing a search in Process Explorer for any open files on the volume in question. (ie. c:\)
This might shed more light on why the volume locking is failing.

    Cheers

    Peter

I have made the PE image using a windows server 2003 R2 media. I kept getting an error about a missing files using the windows XP media.

The Ghost default, which I belive is disk create.

We are running Solution Suite 1.1, specifically the client is Ghost32 8.3

I will take a look at process explorer.

    Thanks,

I tried to use Process Explorer to look at the running processes but it will not run under WinPE.

However, I checked the date and time stamp on the pagefile and it is corresponding to the boot time of the machine so that does appear to be the problem. I will see it I can't do some more research on preventing the creation of a pagefile in WinPE unless someone has a quick answer.
