  • 1.  Switch SEPM to Symantec Cloud

    Posted Jan 04, 2017 02:00 PM

    Hello all,

We have about 50 devices, there are 50 licenses anyway for SEPM. Several Windows server VMs and 40 some clients.  We would like to switch from SEPM to Symantec Cloud.

Currenty we have SEPM 12.1.6 MP5. SEPM runs on a Windows 10 desktop onsite, SEPM 14 does not allow that according to the system requirements so this is necessitating  the switch. We do not have a server to take the installation.

Does anyone have a link to a migration doc?

Additionally, will our current licenses "migrate" to cloud or would we have to purchase new licenses for Cloud?

    Appreciate any help, thank you.

    Does this help?

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH215299

You would need to purchase new licenses.

You my friend are awesome. I've seen the first link but not the second. Thank you.

However, I do not believe we have SEP SBEHow do I tell if I would have it? Our actual license paperwork states nothing about SEP SBE. It just says something like standard essentials Plan C or something like that. I can get the actual verbage if necassary.

You should just be able to go to the Help >> About section in the SEPM to verify.

Yea I go there and it says:

    Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager

    Version 12.1.6 (12.1 RU6 MP5) build 7004 (12.1.7004.6500)

So I think I am going to have get on the phone with them and figure this out.

It is mis-leading. It seems to focus mostly on the a transition from SEP SBE, but, the first article does have SEP Enterprise in there as well. I agree though, best to reach out to them.

Something to keep in mind, which we found out the hard way, is that the cloud SBE is lacking some features which we used with SEPM. You will lose the ability to schedule LiveUpdate in a narrow window of time and the ability to run LiveUpdate from the command line. You will also be forced into installing web browser toolbars and plugins on all clients. If you have custom firewall rules you will need to re-enter them manually.

That said, the SBE cloud management interface is a bit easier to use than the SEPM console. If the above issues don't bother you, then by all means go with the cloud version. But if you want to maintain the level of control one should have over business-level software I'd suggest moving your console to a Windows server. Contrary to the SEP 14 release annoucement, you do not need Server 2016 to run the console.
