    Hello all,

I am having difficulty on trying to solve this issue.  Let me start from the beginning.  The systems admin before me disabled a few items from symantec antivirus (version 10, OS: Windows 2000 SP4) and I couldn't update the virus definitions.  So I then tried to delete Symantec Antivirus from the Control Panel.  When I tried to do so, it was password protected and the systems admin before me never left the password for it.

So now I am having this error "Symantec Antivirus Realtime Protection failed to load".  I've already tried to run "Sevinst.exe" to solve the problem.  I restarted the system as it prompted me to do so.  But I still get the two pop up messages at login "Symantec Antivirus Realtime Protection failed to load".   And the Symantec Sheild in the icon tray has a red circle with a line through it.  I even tried to run "Sevinst.exe" from the command prompt.

Is there a way to correct this problem besides manually uninstalling everything???

    Any help is greatly apreciated!
    Thanks,

    Doug

Running sevinst.exe only updates the symevent drivers.  Usually if symevent drivers had issues you'd see bluescreens or other odd behavior out of the system itself.

If it were me and I wasn't sure what was disabled and what the uninstall password was I'd run nonav on the clients to get rid of it and start over.  That way you know you've set it up right..

If you're feeling lucky you can delete c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs, copy this folder from a machine where it's working and restart Symantec AV service and Symantec Defwatch.  Sometimes realtime protection won't load becuase the service isn't running, service craps out because of corrupted defs.  I wouldn't go this route if you don't know what the uninstall password is though.  There's no guarantee that this will fix the issue either...

cmartinjr - Thanks for clearing somethings up for me.  I did end up finding out what the password was after doing some research.  So I was able to uninstall symantec antivirus client.  I then re-installed the program and I am no long receiving any mesages that relates to realtime protection failed to load.

    Thanks again!

Good deal, glad you chose the uninstall/reinstall route.  That was the safest way to go.
