My husband's company has offered Symantec Endpoint Protection for download on the employee's home computers.  We installed it a week or so ago, and have had no issues at all.  I tried to open it today to do a full system scan, and I am getting the following error:  "Symantec Endpoint Protection cannot open because some Symantec services are stopped.  Restart the Symantec services, adn then open Symantec Endpoint Protection."  I am not sure what services are stopped, and I cannot get the client open.  I have tried the 'repair' option in the install program, but that didn't solve the issue.  Please help, I desperately need to scan my computer!!  Thanks in advance for any advice!!

    Windows XP.  Setup version 12.1.671.4971

Hi, does the problem still persists if you manually started Symantec from the Start menu?

Open the MS Services and look for the following:

    • Symantec Endpoint Protection
    • Symantec Management Client

Both should be started among other Symantec components. Except for the Symantec Network Access Control.

If the repair fails. Try getting a new install package, run that and chose either to repair or uninstall and then install the new package.

    Hello,

This may happen when Windows MSI is not registered correctly with the Windows OS.

Re-registering the Microsoft Installer (MSI) with the OS resolved the problem.  Once the service is registered correctly, the sylink.xml is processed correctly.

For best guidance, see the following Microsoft KB:

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed" error message when you try to install Office

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324516

    Hope that helps!!
