    (I started this new thread because the original thread with this error code in the title was locked.)

    I am running a relatively recent installation of XP (i.e. no previous versions of Symantec products). I encountered this error following uninstallation of Microsoft Security Essentials and a clean install of SEP 12.1.

    After reading several forum entries, I opened Services and scrolled down to find those with Symantec in the title. There are three: Symantec Endpoint Protection, Symantec Management Client, and Symantec Network Access Control. The Symantec Endpoint Protection service was already running. The Symantec Management Client service was not running, but when I started it, it started and then stopped. The Symantec Network Access Control service was not running, and when I started it, it stayed started.

    I then returned to the already open SEP UI, from which the firewall error had disappeared and the only remaining "problem to be fixed" was updating definitions. The definition update ran fine after that.

    Thanks for posting. You may want to add as blog/article as well so it remains more visible. The posts on the forum tend to get pushed to the bottom after newer posts come in.

    SEP doesn't seem to like MSSE/Windows Defender as I've experienced issues with it in the past.

    Thank you for the suggestion, Brian. I will repost. :)

    I think it was an MSSE/Windows Defender issue. I uninstalled MSSE on three machines: the XP machine above, and two Windows 7 machines. I did the same thing on all three: I downloaded the installer for SEP 12.1, disconnected the internet, uninstalled MSSE, rebooted, installed SEP, reconnected the internet, then LiveUpdate. The Windows 7 machines didn't give the error, but the XP machine did.

    Perhaps Windows Defender turned off the service in question.

    I'm running RU2 already.
