  • 1.  Symantec Management Client service not starting

Hey guys, starting last week a server stopped talking to my SEPM.  Upon further review the SMC service is not running on that client.  When I go to start it, I get the below error:

    SEP11_MSVSP07TEST_Error.jpg

Nothing in Event Viewer that looks related to SEP.  This is on a windows 2003 virtual server running a Sharepoint server if that makes a difference.  Client is 11.0 RU 5.

Not sure if anyone has run across this error before.  I am going to start digging, but I figured I would post this here at the same time.

Thanks and have a good weekend.

We had this issue happen once before. For them repairing the SEPM through add or remove programs fixed the issue. Here is our guide for repairing the SEPM through add/remove programs http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009030414141748.

    I hope this helps,

Well the SEPM itself is fine.  It's on a different server.  All other clients report in fine.  This is an endpoint that has stopped working.  the SMC service for the SEP client has stopped starting.

    open task manager
    kill smc.exe
    go to services.msc
make the start up type of symantec managment client service as manual.
no do a repair of symantec endpoint protection from add/ remove programs.
    should work.

Can you let me know the size of this file.

C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\Cltdef.dat file. In case its somewhere around 30 KB its fine , else you can try replacing it from a working machine

Thanks for all the responses guys.  Repair did not work as the reboot did not either.  I did not check the post and see you response this morning Sandip and I just ended up reinstalling the client and it's working fine.

    Thanks guys.
