  • 1.  Target computers rebooting during image restore process - GSS3

    Posted Nov 05, 2015 12:35 PM

    Hi All,

I'm completely stumped on this one. This only started happening somewhat recently.

    GSS3
    Using Ghostcast
Target computers are booting from USB using WinPE3

So we boot up our target computers from a WinPE3 (we also have WinPE5, but it shows the same results as 3) flash drive and start an image restore by partition, it will get ~10-15 minutes into the restore and reboot without warning, and the server will time out the ghostcast session. So far I've tried using different images, reformatting and reimaging the flash drives, setting the startup type on the target PC's to "Legacy Only" and reformatting the partitions of the target drives on the PC's. As I'm typing this I'm seeing the computers are rebooting randomly on idle now (not connected to a ghostcast session at all, ghost32.exe isn't even running.) This was working fine before the upgrade to GSS3, and our WinPE3 images have not changed.

Any ideas on this are appreciated.

    Best Regards,

    Adam

First of all, which Hotfixes do you have installed?

Is every machine affected or just a specific subset?

Have you tried with a USB hard disk in place of a flash drive?

Is the power supply to the machines stable?  I'm a great believer in checking for basic hardware issues before blaming software, especially if your machines are rebooting when apparently idle.  Are they idling while booted to WinPE or idling in an actual installed operating system or something else?  Put one of the machines on a UPS and see if the problem persists.

    Hi EdT,

Thanks for the input! We're running GSS3 HF3 and every machine we've tried imaging has the same result. Our current inventory consists of Lenovo ThinkCentre M73's and Lenovo ThinkPad T440/T450's.

The machines are able to boot into the installed Windows normally without rebooting. These are set up at a test bench we have, and a lot of these machines have work done in the installed OS before we ultimately decide to re-image them. They reboot when they're booted into WinPE and left idle for ~10 minutes, or when they are running a ghostcast session (both restoring and capturing an image has the same result.) We have also tried using a UPS to no avail.

We're able to keep afloat with the machines already in service by just using the installed OS and cleaning it up, but this is crippling when we need to put brand new machines in service.

Could we just coincidentally have two bad WinPE images? We've been using the same WinPE3 image for awhile and consciously logging any driver changes made. We've rolled back to our older image versions to test the driver cahnges with the same result. Any other suggestions on this are much appreciated, this has me pulling at my hair!

    Thanks!
