    I am just trying to evaluate Symantec Desktop Encryption, jumped through all the hoops of installing the Akamai downloader, registration, etc. (what an awful user experience btw), then got the email with the license key, and... NOPE. What the heck? And there's nobody to email, license email says not to respond. This is supposed to encourage new customers?

    You might have better luck contacting a Symantec Partner to help you through this process.  If you're in the UK then we (link in my sig) might be able to help, but otherwise please use the bleow link to find a partner in your region:
