Triggering Location Awareness Switching Notification to the SEPM Admin

  • 1.  Triggering Location Awareness Switching Notification to the SEPM Admin

    Posted Mar 30, 2016 03:36 AM

Hi all, I need to know that can we make SEP to trigger a notification or some kind of an intimation to the SEP Admin whenever clients switches from one location to another ?  Is there any way of doing this.  I know that when clients switches from one location to another notification will be displayed on the user machine but how about if we want an notification or some other kind of intimation so that the Admin will know that client has switched location ?

    Appreciate your support.

    Thanks

there is no such notification available as of yet, you can surely send in this as a idea to symantec.

AFAIK there is no notification which can trigger an email. Reason may be that a client is able to change its location multiple times during a heartbeat period (it checks the conditions every 4 seconds by default), so the SEPM is not able to retrace the clients' locations precisely.

However, in some cases it could be an interesting feature, so you should launch an idea.

Yes actually there should be something that should intimate the Administrator whenever the client switches from one location to another. As of now the only notification is displayed on the user machine whever the location is changed.

I agree. This is a feature which could be implemented.

However, wonder how may emails may be triggered if the there are more than 1000 + laptop users moving around.

No administrator would like to keep receiving emails but consider a log to keep track of these users change in locations.

    Worth adding an IDEA...

A very valid point at times I too have felt that there is a need for such notifications, but as Greg & mithun has said sometime if the clients switches multiple location it would trigger plenty of unnecessary notifications especially in a large environment.

See atleast there should be an option if you want you can enable the notification if you dont need we can keep it disable but the point is atleast there should be some notification or atleast some kind of logging that should keep us aware of this.

If the admin need to know every time the client switches to different location the client has to connect to the SEPM every time a change in location happens. This is against the Heartbest concept, which is something that we use to set how often the client shoudl connect to the SEPM. Of course, we already have an exception for this, which is know as "Fast Pathing". But this feature is only to upload CRITICAL SECURITY related events

If such a feature is made available in future, even if you have the alerts disabled, the clients will still need to upload their status to the SEPM. Hence, it will create bandwidth issues in the network and performance overload issues on the SEPM server.
