  • 1.  Unable to release some mails from quarantine

    Hi,

We use Brightmail Gateway appliance version 9.0.1-10, and I have a problem with the spam quarantine. There is an email with unscannable status in the quarantine, when I tried to release it I got the 'Cannot release the message. It has either been released or was unable to contact the SMTP host.' error message. It is strange because other mails can be released from the quarantine with no problem.
I have already read some discussions which suggest to change the delivery type of non-local emails. I tried it with no success.

Can someone help me with it?

    Thanks,
    Laszlo

try to navigate to this  administration > controle center > SMTP
then define new Define new host
    For your mail server
    and port: 25

you made sure the recipient is a valid user? The last time I saw this behaviour is when the user was being rejected by the mail sever as invalid. Check the brightmaillog.log in the status tab under logs on the left side. You'll need to select control center and then you will see it in the list. Match up the last time this happened to the time stamps and you should see the error the mail server gave us.

Thanks for the hint but I have already defined an SMTP host. In fact I done it when I installed the software for the first time about 16 months ago.

I am absolutely sure that the recipient is valid. Actually all three recipients are valid. Here is the log entry about the event:

'Jun 16 2010 09:32:44 [http-41443-Processor12] ERROR - com.brightmail.common.InvalidArgumentException: Cannot release the message. It has either been released or was unable to contact the SMTP host.'

Unfortunately, it doesn't contain the information which take me closer to the solution.

We have had a similar issue with our Brightmail Gateway, however we were unable to release ANY messages from quarantine.

Anytime we tried to release a message from the spam filter (keep in mind this was ALL messages) we would get the error:
'Cannot release the message. It has either been released or was unable to contact the SMTP host' This error would display, in red, on the actual Spam filter tab.

The brightmail log error however was:
    Jun 07 2010 13:45:36 [http-41443-Processor8] ERROR - com.brightmail.common.BrightmailException: null ; nested exception is:
         com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 501 bogus mail from

Are you seeing this error in your brightmail log at all?

We have two mail servers (Exchange and IPSwitch iMail), we were able to resolve this for the iMail server and are working on a solution for our Exchange server. If you are seeing this same error, i'd be happy to share the fixes on our end. Otherwise, it is probably a different issue.

I guess we have different problems :(
I only have this issue with some specific mails, otherwise the users are able to release their mails from the quarantine. The log entries are different, too. We have only an 'InvalidArgumentException' message, while yours is more informative: '501 bogus mail from'. In case of IMail you have to allow NULL senders, but it seems you have already found this solution. In case of Exchange I suggest to check the log again for error messages, and try to figure out what can cause the problem.
I also have this solution from Symantec:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-gate.nsf/docid/2008030719453854
Maybe the first suggestion will be good for you.

Then you need to run a packet capture on your mail server while you are releasing the mail so we can see exactly how your mail server is responding. Is there any anti-spam software running on the mail server? Its certainly possible that when we are trying to relay a message we consider spam that some product or featur eon the mail server is thinking the same thing.

    Thanks for the clue!
It wasn't the antispam feature, but the size-limits were different on the gateway and the mail server.
    Thanks again!
