  • 1.  Understanding GUP settings

    Hi All,

After reading various guides and technotes, I just cannot seem to get a clear answer on my question.

I am trying to look at the "Maximum time that clients try to download updates from a group update provider...". What I do not understand is the full impact of this setting and what is considered "trying to download updates".

A few scenarios I am looking at

    - There is the obvious one of the GUP server being offline. With this setting, the client would try to reach the GUP and would failover to teh SEPM after 1 hour (assuming the setting is 1 hour). This is correct, right?

    - If the GUP is still downloading the content from the SEPM server and it takes more than 1 hour, will the client keep waiting for the GUP server to be updated, or will it failover to the SEPM?

    - If a client is waiting to get the update from the GUP, but the GUP is still updating other clients (limited by the Maximum simultaneous downloads) and it has waited for more than 1 hour, will it continue to wait or failover to the SEPM?

If there is a document that contains this type of information, please let me know and I will read up on it.

    Thanks

    Martin

    This article defines the feature:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH96417

It's only in the case that GUP is down (offline).

So in you #2 and #3 cases above, the GUP is not offline, the clients would still use the despite, even with the examples you mentioned aboce in #2 and #3.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Symantec community.

I would like to answer your queries.

    Q. There is the obvious one of the GUP server being offline. With this setting, the client would try to reach the GUP and would failover to the SEPM after 1 hour (assuming the setting is 1 hou-r). This is correct, right?

    -->  That's correct.

    Q. If the GUP is still downloading the content from the SEPM server and it takes more than 1 hour, will the client keep waiting for the GUP server to be updated, or will it failover to the SEPM?

--> I believe it will complete existing download prior to check whether GUP is online or not. It's not recommended to allow client to bypass GUP especially if they are on WAN links.

    Q. If a client is waiting to get the update from the GUP, but the GUP is still updating other clients (limited by the Maximum simultaneous downloads) and it has waited for more than 1 hour, will it continue to wait or failover to the SEPM?

--> If GUP is available, clients will never bypass the GUP.
