Running windows xp sp3 with Symantec Client Security installed.  The version is unknown but within Client Security there is Symantec antivirus full version 10.0.0.846 and Client Firewall version 8.6.0.134.  I need to completely uninstall all of this to install antivirus and spyware from another source.  Experience tell me tha removing the components though control panel is not good enough.  Can you guide me to the correct procedure to uninstall everything?

See this KB that points to the correct manual un-install documents for your product(s).

removing from control panel is the best solutions, if it fails you can follow the uninstall procedure mentioned above...
or else call support get cleanwipe tool will wipe out everything

Will removing through control panel take it all out?  If not why not just go to the cleanwipe tool?  Manually removing has a lot of room for Operator error.

removing from control pannel will remove it all, sometimes its said that cleanwipe tool causes undesirable results so better not to use it when you can remove it via add/remove programs,  If not go to the cleanwipe tool

Thanks Rafeeq.  I've read all the procedure for the manual removal and there are too many steps that start with the word "if".   I will start in control panel and remove Symantec Client Security, 140 MB; LiveReg, 2.86MB and Live Update 2.6, 9.12MB.  If I have trouble installing the new antivirus, I'll get the cleanwipe tool.

Yes , that seems to be the right procedrue, clean wipe should be used when you have trouble getting rid of legacy clients or unable to install new versions coz of left overs, Symantec does not provide support for this tool, use this only when you have no other options :)
Let us know if you face any trouble while upgrading ,
