  • 1.  Uninstall/Reinstall SEP 11 for Vista 32-bit

    Posted Jan 29, 2010 03:03 PM

A Vista machine in a domain had SEP 11 installed and it wasn't updating from the server. I uninstalled it, but when I went to reinstall it that didn't do it.

I sent an e-mail to the user from the server, he download the 32-bit client per the e-mail, and when I ran it, it progresses and then the status bar goes backwards and it doesn't install. No error message on why.

This same client install worked fine in Windows 7 Pro and for other XP clients in the network.

I followed this procedure for uninstalling it from Vista 32-bit: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007080209280848?Open&docid=2009102111584948&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=docid

But I got the same result - the client would start installing, and then the progress bar would roll backwards and it would not install.

I have tried pushing the client from the server too, and that didn't work.

I have not tried this CleanWipe utility I have read about, and it seems like I need to engage support just to get it.

    Anything else?

install liveupdate first and then install the client
    open cd1 of sepm
    install liveudpate on the client
    and then run the setup.exe
    this should install that client
if it fails then paste the sep_inst.log file which can be found under
    start -run - temp
or under windows % temp folder

Okay, I am shooting in the dark. From my experience nd from your description, I am suspecting a profile issue in Windows vista.

    Try this...

    * In the registry, Navigate to  HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

    * Change the value of Appdata from %APPDATA% to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

    * Close the Registry and try to install SEP.

Unfortunately, if that doesn't help get us the install log :)

I DID find an error in the Event Log pointing to a problem with LiveUpdate (even though it was totally wiped).

So I tried installing that first, rebooted, and tried installing it several times, and rebooting and running the SEP install. Still the same results.

Tried Visu's registry edit, and THAT worked! (Although LiveUpdate was still installed, just to note.)

Thanks guys! SEP is installed again.
