Is there any plan in the future to allow unmanaged clients to get product updates from LU? The impact of having to manually upgrade clients is huge.

Unfortunately it's not possible to receive product updates via liveupdate for both managed and unmanaged clients.
My guess is being an enterprise product to stay on safer side always suggested to test the version prior to roll out on large scale. Every customer will have his own set of configuration so it's always suggested to test it prior to upgrade.
