I try to do a custom install on a Windows Serverr 2012 R2 (until now for Testing-Purposes only, thank God!)

Installed SQL Express (with named Instance "GSS"), Management Studio, SPs and Updates für SQL prior to GSS-Installation to put the SQL-Instances-Path to antother Drive (Server-HDD has C: for System and D: for Data, SQL-Instances-Path is D:\SQL-Inszanzen (German)).

After Installing SQL I start GSS-Setup and chose "Custom".
- Ghost File-Server-Path: D:\GSS
- GSS-Server on zhis Computer
- Install-Path (again) D:\GSS
- SQL-Server ist found, Database-Name changed to GSS
- Windows NT Authorization
- PXE-Server on this Computer, Path D:\GSS
- Direct Connection from Client to GSS via IP
- Console on this Computer
- Klick on "Install"

And then in happens: "UpgradeUtility.exe" crashes and the Installation does not start.
I can reproduce this many Times. What is it? Any Ideas?

ONE Time with in my Opinion exactly the same setting it worked and GSS installed, but that Test-Installation is broken due to "too much testing", so I have to do an new Installation.

I´ve seen the exact same error when I tried to upgrade from DS 6.9 SP6 to GSS 3.1.

Is this a completly new Install or are you using your existing DB?

We are able to resolve this by upgrading first from DS 6.9 SP6 to GSS 3.0 and after that to GSS3.1.

Please try to install GSS 3.0 first and after that run an upgrade to GSS 3.1 MP1 which reported as Hotfix 1 when installing...

My One-Time-Positive-Install on my Test-System has only been a lucky coincidence?
But it may well be, that a future install on a real Server, not only a Test-System, will work without problems?

BTW: I try to do a fresh, new Install of GSS3.1, no Update from an existing Installation of DS or GSS.

Sometimes I can only shake my head about our Friends at Symantec...

No, I´m logged in as Admin so I do not the Setup-Routine with "Running as Admin", although I know that this are two different things sometimes.
I did not look into the Event-Logs.

Due to the answer of Network23 und due to the Fact, that nobody else seems to have this problem I conclude, that this might have do do only with the Machine I´m testing GSS on at the Moment and I do not try to recover this Problem at the Moment because I have an Image of that Machine with a working Installation aof GSS 3.1.

May be I will com back to this when this error happens on the Server I plan to install GSS an, but that ist still "some Testing away".
