  • 1.  Upgrading - Questions

    Posted May 02, 2012 01:56 PM

We are working on upgrading from 3.0 to 3.2MP5.  However, we've never actually went through an upgrade before since this is the orignal version.

    1. How long does the process typically take?  Obviously hardware varies but ballpark figures are welcome.

    2. What happens to users that try to enroll and/or update their policy while the upgrade is occuring?

    3.  If the upgrade fails, does the server revert back to the previous version, or do we have to do a full restore of everything?

3B - If we have to do a full restore, estimated timeframe?

Sorry for the questions, I have to provide a business impact overview and the guide I was able to find was detailed as in the steps but not the above questions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

depends on how many users/data you have on the server

    1. upgrades can be quick, less then an hour. totally depends on how many users you have.

    2. enrollment will not work, policy update will not work. this can be mitigated if you have your servers clustered behind a web load balancer and clients pointed to a vip. then you just upgrade one server at a time. There have been some interesting comments from other symantec employees that suggest that you need to un-cluster before upgrading, but there is no official documentation on this subject.

    3.  If the upgrade fails it's best to restore the old version of software, reverting will not be automatic

3b. depends on data but i'd say 1-2 hours.

My suggestion would be to have a backup copy of the server NOT on the server only. Download the new version of PGP server and your existing version, have both DVDs/ISOs ready before trying to upgrade. it will save alot of time if there are issues with the upgrade.
