upgrading (updating?) from SEP 11.0.2 to 11.0.6 MP3

Currently running 11.0.2 management server, downloaded the 11.0.6 MP3 release.  How simple is to upgrade?  Any improvements to make it worthwhile?  Do clients update automatically or will I need to manually push?

You will need to first upgrade to RU6 (11.0.6005) before going to RU6MP3 (11.0.6300).  You can find the download in fileconnect as well.  There have been several improvements since MR2 that will make it worthwhile.  You will need to assign packages to the client groups to upgrade them.  All of this can be found in:

the newest version of SEP 11 is SEP 11.0.6. MP3 and soon it will be 11.0.7 (July)

SEP 12.1 is a new lineup product so it has only the name from SEP and can be migrated but its a new lineup Product like SAV was before.

    Hello,

I would recommend you to upgrade Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and the SEP clients to 11.0.6005 and then  to 11.0.6300.

I would like you to read and Check this Symantec Thread before you take any decision:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/sepm-upgrade-110420275-1106-mp3

    &

About Maintaining Consistency of Software Versions throughout a SEP 11 Organization

    Again, its your decision...

Now, Since you are carrying  Older version 11.0.5002

We recommend you to upgrade the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and all clients to Latest version.

You can download the latest software from Fileconnect.

    https://fileconnect.symantec.com/

Since you are carrying older version than 11.0.6005 (RU6a), there would be 2 upgrades you will have to go through. Please check the steps below:

    1) From Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.5002  to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.6005 (RU6a)

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH131653

    2) From Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.6005 (RU6a) to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.6300 (RU6 MP3)

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH155655

Reason for Migration:---> check the Symantec Article below:

Release notes for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.x and Symantec Network Access Control 11.0.x

Yes, for Automatic Upgrades of all SEP 11.0.2000 clients, you can follow the Auupgrade feature from SEPM...

    Upgrading clients by using AutoUpgrade

You can upgrade SEP 11.6 to SEP 12.1

    check the URL

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH163707&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1310217411902

The clients can be automatically upgraded to 12.1 provided you have configured AUto Upgrade on SEPM.

If you are going to go through the trouble of upgrading your system (And you really should, MR2 is pretty old and there are so many fixes and improvements in the later versions), I would suggest going straight to SEP 12.1.

The upgrade methodology is the same as going to RU6.

    Basic steps is:

    1) Upgrade the SEPM Server.
To do this, run the SEPM 12.1 installer on the SEPM 11 MR2 box. It will automatically detect SEPM 11 MR2 and upgrade it.

    2) Upgrade our clients
Some of the previous posts gave some information about upgrading clients -- so I won't go over this in detail, but your basic options are

    1. Auto-Upgrade feature. This is like a 'policy' setting you set in the SEPM console that will tell the manage clients to download and install the upgrade.
    2. Export a client package. This will give you an executable that you can post on a share or give to people on a thumb drive.
    3. Email update (New feature in 12.1). You can also email your group the client package. What this does is post a copy of the exported package on the SEPM web server, and then helps you create an email that contains a web link to the upgrade package on SEPM.

Whether you go from SEPM 11 RU6, or SEPM 12, the upgrade technique is the same.

I would greatly recommend going straight to SEPM 12. It's about the same amount of work, but the protection technology in SEP 12 is much better than the SEP 11 line. If you are going to go through the trouble of upgrading, I recommend going straight to SEP 12.

There are a lot of benefits to upgrading, no name a few:

    • Update Deltas in MR2 are very slow and very CPU intensive. Later versions use  the new xDelta system with is much faster, smaller, and takes a lot less CPU.
    • Better performance on both the SEPM server and SEP clients.
    • In SEP 12 scan times have been reduced.
    • In SEP 12, the protection technology is not just a little better -- there is completely new technology! You really want it.
