  • 1.  USB boot image push problem

    Posted Aug 09, 2007 03:40 PM
I created a bootable USB drive that loads the NIC, then runs ghost.exe.

On every computer I try, regardless of SATA or IDE drives, pushing a new image finishes in about 5 seconds and is only about 3000KB.

When I run the same ghost.exe, the process takes much longer and is much bigger.

I am using the exact same ghost.exe for both operations, yet, when loaded from USB, I cannot push images.  Applying images works fine.

    Any thoughts?

    Hi PXEBooter ,

Can you just clarify this : "When I run the same ghost.exe, the process takes much longer and is much bigger."

Where do you store that image? How big is the image when you open it with Image Explorer?

What  error message do you get when you are unable to push your image ?Do you use GhostCast Server for this?

    Cheers

When running ghost.exe from a floppy, the image push to a location on a server takes 6-7 minutes and the image is around 6 GB..

When running ghost.exe from a USB drive, the image push to a location on a server takes 4-5 seconds and the image is around 3 MB.

There is no error message when running from USB.  Just a tiny file that is not a true image.

Yes, GhostCast is being used on the server.

Still no solution as of yet.  I have tried different nics, computers, images, and versions of ghost.exe.

    Nothing has helped...

Anyone have any other ideas?  Again, I have no problem applying images from the Ghostcast Server to a box...

    Hi,

Just to clarify, did you try opening the 3mb .gho file that gets created? What I suspect is that the USB device assumes the dirve number you were trying to image and so you have accidently imaged the USB boot device instead, which would be around 3mb in size.

    Regards,
    Morgan

Well, I figured out the problem, but it brought up another.

When running ghost from floppies, I could select the diagnostic partition that comes on dells and such, and Ghost would include both the diagnostic and the OS partitions in the image.

From USB, if I select the diagnostic partition, that is the only part of the hard drive that is imaged...I have to manually choose the OS partition to image it.

So that leads me to my question, how can I get Ghost run off of USB to include both partitions?

Simply run the 'disk to image' clone option from the ghost gui. Ghost will copy the contents of the disk to the image. I suspect you may have been trying the 'partition to image' clone which will allow only 1 partition at a time to be imaged.

    Hope this helps,
    Morgan

Just curious, how did you fix your original problem?
