  • 1.  Using images created using v2.5 under a 3.x license?

    Posted Feb 02, 2017 09:29 AM

    Hi,

I have 20 computers that were configured using the same "standard" image created using GSS 2.5. I currently have 20 licenses for GSS 2.5 for these computers. I will eventually need to image 10 new computers and therefore need to purchase new licenses. If I purchase GSS 3.x, can I still use the same standard image I have been using? Please note, these computers are not connected to the internet so I am unable to do any upgrading.

(If this is covered in the EULA somewhere please point it out to me.)

    Thanks!

Yes you can use the .gho files created from ghost 2.5 when you migrate to GSS 3.1.

Unfortunately there is no direct upgrade path from Ghost 2.5 to GSS 3.1, so jobs/tasks will need to be recreated.

    Hi Brycen,

    Thanks for the response.

When we install the images, we have a boot disc with Linux ThinStation from which we run ghost.exe to install the images. Can I continue to use this same boot disc without violating any license agreements when buying GSS 3.1? Not sure if the Linux distro has changed...

I'm intending to leave GSS 2.5 on the original 20 computers and buying GSS 3.1 for the newer computers, but I'm hoping I don't need two different boot discs for the different versions.

    Amy,

You would need to create a new boot disc for GSS 3.1 but everything should still be compatible and LinuxPE is still an option.

How do you mean leave GSS 2.5 on 20 computers? If you are using a boot disc then you just need to plug the usb into the client machine correct?

    Brycen,

The full GSS 2.5 is installed on the 20 computers (after imaging) in case the user wants to use other GSS features later.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology...I have a boot disc which we use to boot into Linux, run ghost, and load a new image (see attached). The image is contained on a separate hard drive or DVD, not the same as the boot disc. I don't plan on using GSS 3.1 as an application (it will be installed on the 10 new computers for others to use when I'm done), but it's still not clear to me, from a licensing standpoint, if I can continue using the same boot disc (with Ghost built in to the Linux OS created using GSS 2.5 files) or I need to make a GSS 3.1 specific one. It would not be fun to maintain 2 different boot discs. I'm sure it would technically work (the computer doesn't know what license I have when imaging) but I don't want to violate any license agreements.

    Amy,

Ghost Standard Tools 3.1 boot disc would replace your Ghost 2.5 boot disc. Ghost 2.5 does not have the ability to use the new Winpe versions, which means newer hardware seen in machines will be missing drivers during the boot process.

While linuxPE can be efficient, you will see issues with linux not having the correct drivers (especially for network cards) as new machines and hardware are purchased. I would recommend creating a boot disc with Ghost Standard Tools 3.1 and using Winpe10.

You are free to use Ghost 2.5 as long as you would like, but eventually it will be useless as hardware continues to progress.

    Amy,

Did you have any further questions or has this issue been resolved?

Resolved for now. Thanks. We will continue to use LinuxPE due to configuration control issues until we become hardware limited.
