  • 1.  VMWare vSphere upgrade - warning

    Posted Jul 27, 2009 04:35 AM
    Hi Folks,

For those of you using VMWare and thinking of upgrading to vSphere, I've a little warning it'd be sensible to give (since we did it over the weekend and ran into an issue).

Apparently when you install the upgraded VM Tools on the virtual machine, it deletes a file called msvcp71.dll from the System 32 directory.

Amongst other things, this prompts an automatic re-install of SEP (and apparently stops Corporate Edition)

One of the other things that is a bit nasty is that it completely stops SQL 2000 from running.

The fix is easy enough - copy the dll file back to the System 32 directory (if you are lucky enough to be able to find one).

I'm amazed we missed this in out pre-upgrade testing, but somehow we did.

    Cheers
    Nick

    Hello Nick,

thanks for the wonderful input, very informative,

installation of SEP is more dependent on this dll, msvcp71.dll
sometimes it complains about permissions  on this file also..

We had a client who updated to ESXi v4   Vsphere, and we found that when you would log into a server, the MSVCP71.dll file was missing (as reported by SEP).  I did a search for the file, but found that there were multiple versions of the file, some in the symantec program files folder and another one in the live update folder.  I was going to restore the file to the system32 folder, but am hesatant.  Their SEP needs to be updated, so I think I will just install the updates and see if it puts that file back where it belongs.  That way I dont have to worry about file versions.
