  • 1.  wgx service cannot start because of missing file (solution)

I just installed Symantec End Point Security on SBS 2003 R2, which has Symantec backup Exec 11d also on it. The server is always kept up to date with Windows Updates and such. It was currently running SEP 11.02

The new SEP version that was installed is 11.05. I installed and rebooted to find the WGX error that people have been getting for almost a year now, with no real solution.  I had read wgx is no longer used and how to edit the registry and then to delete the wgx service altogether. After I did those 2 things and rebooted, the live anti-virus failed to operate, but manual scans seemed to work. The Yellow Symantec shield had a warning sign and said it was malfunctioning.

I then read one person went into the control panel-->Add remove programs--> and reconfigured SEP to not include EMAIL scanning. I tried that and no good.

I then figured if a year went by and Symantec did not fix the problem, then they could not reproduce it. I was thinking they might not have any real world servers to install on, just theur lab systems.

I then figured if I just installed SEP and left the defaults, that it would be as if I was in a SEP lab. I had unselected email, but during the install I also unselected Proactive Threat because it does not run on servers (at least SBS 2003 R2) anyways. You install it and it gives a green disabled message. I selected to install both Email and ProactiveThreat, but only at the top of the selection tree. I did not select any sub options to install for these 2 sections. I only wanted AV installed.

It ran threw the install and then everything appeared fine on the yellow Symantec shield. I then rebooted and everything is still OK.

So, the problem seems to happen when options that were once installed in a previous version of SEP are unselected in the new version. Either that the install program has to run 2 times to completely install???

Anyway, good luck to all of those who still have the problem.
    Hope this helps.

I would suggest when you are upgrading from a old version where you have these kind of issues specially on the servers. Remove the Old version and then install then new version.
