  • 1.  Why does ServiceDesk 7.1 installation doc say to disable UAC?

    Posted Sep 20, 2011 03:47 PM

    Hi,

The install documentation for ServiceDesk 7.1 tells us to disable UAC (this instruction is also given here - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO54423)

However - it does not say WHY this is needed. UAC is a very useful security tool and in my opinion (and many others') it should definitely not be disabled.

What is the reason for disabling UAC? We need a good reason for disabling a useful security option besides saying it is in the documentation, it's required for install, etc.

    Thanks,

    Bill

The Workflow and ServiceDesk installer does a few things that UAC would interrupt/interfere with, such as finding all the IIS sites on your machine. (done on the Server Configuration page of the install)

While I have UAC turned off, you MIGHT be able to get around this by running the installer as an admin (right-click, Run As Admin). Also, once the installer runs, UAC can be re-enabled; it's not required to be off when running Designer tools.

    Hi,

In that case, I recommend the documentation be updated to say "run the installer as administrator," not to disable UAC. Disabling UAC is not best practice and should be avoided.
