  • 1.  Will PGP Keyserver 7.0 work with Windoes Server 2012R2?

    Posted Dec 02, 2014 09:07 AM

Presently we are running PGP Keyserver 7.0 on a Windows 2008 server. We plan to update the server to 2012R2 and were wondering if this version of Keyserver is compatible? If not, what do we need to upgrade to?

    Thanks!

Keyserver 7.0  MIGHT run on server 2012R2.
However, Keyserver 7.0 reached end of life some time ago. If you have a support contract, your best bet is to upgrade to Symantec Encryption Management Server. However, the upgrade process will be somewhat difficult. So I do not recommend trying it with some advice from the forums, as you may need to go through several steps to get to a newer version of our software.

There is an older upgrade guide out there :
Migrating from Keyserver 7.x to PGP Universal Server - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH149856

PGP Universal server is the older version of Symantec Encryption Management Server (SEMS). So, the guide may not get you up and running on SEMS.  On the forum boards, I typically do not try to push people toward contacting support. However in your case, this is not a simple upgrade. I would recommend contacting support (with a support contract) to run through an upgrade.

Thanks Phil for the quick response-

Since we are building out the 2012R2 servers from scratch, if we had SEMS could that just be a clean install or are there Keyserver files needed as far as history goes that need to be retained?

Whether or not a clean start with a new environment is neccesary is entirely up to the customer.

That being said, you should consider that private keys are likely stored on the old keyserver, and those private keys are likely neccesary to access data.

I highly recommend reviewing the migration article, and consider what features are used in your environment vs what you would be using on a PGP Universal Server (now known as Symantec Encryption Management Server)

If you do not believe you need the data that the migration recommends exporting, then perhaps you can do a fresh start with SEMS.

    A little about SEMS :
SEMS is an appliance like linux based server. It is standalone, and requires its own server.
Many people set it up as as virtual machine with VMWARE.

For information on how SEMS should be setup with VMWARE see the following link :
