Someone asked me about how to protect an old Windows 2000 server with a secure antivirus software.

I know that it is a really old OS but do you know if there is a version of SEP that still supports this operating system ?

    Thanks!

    No.

    12.1 does not support Win2k

11.x does but is end of support life so technically no.

SEP 12.1 cannot be installed on Windows 2000 machine so it can be installed only with SEP 11.x which is currently EOSL. so if you still wish to protect your 2000 machines then install SEP 11.x and have it communicate to SEPM 12.1.x this way it can pul AV updates alone to have some sort of protection. please be reminded that those definition is unsupported & not tested.

Sep 11.x will support but Sep 11.x is Eol as of Jan 5th. so the answer is 'No'.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

Support for Windows 2000 is no longer available from its manufacturer.  Microsoft's Mainstream Support End Date for Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Professional was June 30, 2005.  The Extended Support End date was July 13, 2010

While SEP 12.1 cannot be installed on this unsupported Windows 2000 OS, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 can try to protect Windows 2000 computers until they have been retired from the organization.

Reference: About Support for Microsoft Windows 2000 in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1

It's time to upgrade to the latest operating system because depending on the nature of the threats involved, Windows Server OS may be susceptible to viruses and risks that more recent iterations of Windows is immune to

    Hi riva11,

With so many known unpatched vulnerabilities, I would not entrust anything of any importance to a Win2K platform.  Investing in a modern OS, properly configured, with good defenses in place, will save a lot more money in the long run than a compromised Win2K server.

    Hope this helps!
