Conserving your Internet bandwidth with Symantec cloud services (US English captions)

Jul 12, 2013 12:50 PM

Symantec Endpoint Protection updates, virus definitions, and software updates for the Agent and other services are downloaded from the Internet to each computer on your network. These updates may consume more Internet bandwidth than some organizations are comfortable using.

The Local Update Service helps to minimize Internet bandwidth consumption. Symantec recommends that our customers take advantage of this free enhancement to our cloud services.

This video demonstrates:

  •     How the local update service works
  •     How to implement the service, and
  •     How to assign computers to strategically located local update host computers

More details about the "Local Update Service" can be found in the Symantec.cloud Help.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

This video will familiarize you with how to use the Local Update Service to conserve your Internet bandwidth when using our cloud services.

Endpoint Protection updates, security updates, virus definitions, and software updates for the Agent and other services are downloaded to each computer. These updates may consume more bandwidth than some organizations are comfortable using. So we developed a feature to minimize the bandwidth consumption of the updates. It is useful for both small networks and much larger ones.

The Local Update Service uses local update hosts to securely relay updates to nearby computers, while conserving network bandwidth.

To implement the Local Update Service, carefully consider your requirements and your network topology; then designate computers to act as local update hosts.

Designating your local update hosts is done within a computer's profile.

You then assign groups of computers to a specific local update host using a Global System policy. Updates are downloaded from the Internet to the local update host cache, which is updated as needed. The updates are then delivered to the assigned computers using only your local network bandwidth.

You can find additional information about the Local Update Service and other features using the "?" menu. Thanks for watching.
