The Ultimate Backup Appliance

NetBackup Integrated Appliances

The NetBackup Appliances feature the entire NetBackup Platform suite on performance- and cost-optimized hardware — a single turnkey solution for backup, storage, and deduplication. Deploying an appliance when refreshing media servers, consolidating point products, protecting remote offices, or modernizing protection in the data center reduces operating expenses and integration complexity.
Symantec understands the shifting needs of the data center and offers NetBackup appliances as a way to eliminate the time and effort of installing, configuring, and maintaining your backup and disaster recovery hardware and software components. The appliances enable efficient, storage-optimized backup and recovery for the data center, remote office, and virtual environments.
When it's time to upgrade or expand the backup or disaster recovery hardware infrastructure, many customers follow a traditional path to acquire, build, and integrate their own servers and storage; or they look to point products. It is a reflex that is well known, but also one with hidden productivity costs. In addition, many customers find themselves with multiple backup products in their environment. What started as a good idea with a single point product has evolved to multiple, disparate point products, including dedupe storage silos. The outcome is increased cost and complexity. Symantec NetBackup appliances enable companies to consolidate these products — whether separate backup products for physical or virtual, tape, disk, or virtual tape libraries (VTL) — into a single, unified backup and recovery platform.
The NetBackup appliances are ideal for customers looking for turnkey solutions for their organization. The appliances enable efficient, storage-optimized backup and recovery for the data center, remote offices and virtual environments. Built on the strength of Symantec NetBackup software, these enterprise-class appliances continue to be one of the leaders in the integrated purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) market1 offering both lower total cost of ownership and higher levels of reliability.

NetBackup Appliance Family

According to IDC, "Integrated Purpose Built Backup Appliances (PBBAs) provide customers a comprehensive solution that includes the application software, allowing them to scale out their environment to add master or media servers easily. Additionally, the integrated PBBA solutions have a centralized management console, allowing for ease of management and implementation. Integrated PBBA solutions are highly tuned and provide customers a truly turnkey, simplified way to solve their backup and recovery challenges."2 — International Data Corporation

The Symantec NetBackup Integrated appliance family consists of two series:
  • NetBackup 5200 series – a versatile, cost-optimized integrated backup appliance that can be deployed as a master server, media server, or both for a NetBackup domain. In addition, it supports expanded storage capacity for deduplication and Advanced Disk.
  • NetBackup 5300 series – a performance-optimized integrated backup media server with high-density storage to support greater performance, capacity, and resiliency requirements in the enterprise.

Simplify Data Center transformation and modernization

Deduplication is rapidly becoming the cornerstone for managing the unprecedented data growth in physical, virtualized as well as hybrid data center environments. The adoption rate for deduplication is only accelerating and the question many IT organizations are facing today is: Can I have a cost effective and scalable deduplication solution that can streamline my existing backup and recovery, easily and transparently deploy, evolve with my data centers, while helping to reduce and control both CAPEX and OPEX costs?

Symantec deduplication: visibility matters

Traditional approaches to deduplication are CPU intensive, require excessive hardware resources and often need additional backup server resources to boost deduplication performance. Without an intelligent view of the data stream, many technologies guess at the optimum dedupe algorithm and try to adjust the moving target block size dynamically at the expense of heavy resource utilization which can make throughput and storage efficiency more expensive. Symantec deduplication, a solution feature in Symantec NetBackup™, radically transforms traditional deduplication by applying the best approach for a specific backup without the need for computationally intensive processing. With the unique ability to exactly identify the data formats and object boundaries, Symantec provides much more than storage reduction for backups. Using this visibility, it automatically selects the most optimal deduplication algorithm, with backups experiencing storage savings as high as 99.4 percent.

NetBackup Appliances: CSX Technology

CSX Technology Eases Backup Management with Symantec NetBackup Appliances
"By achieving up to 90 percent deduplication rates with Symantec NetBackup 7 software and Symantec NetBackup 5000 appliances, we project we'll save more than $400,000 over the next three years on backup hardware and media."
– Albert Chin, Network Engineer, PerkinElmer, Inc.
"Symantec's recent release of the NetBackup 5220 Appliance truly provides a 'backup in a box' approach to data protection. DLT recently test drove Symantec's Netbackup 5220 Appliance and had remarkable results. Not only did the appliance receive high marks for ease of use, but the NetBackup software product and startup of the actual appliance made the deduplication rates and backup speeds the top in industry standards."
– Rick Marcotte, President and CEO, DLT Solutions
"We only wanted to use deduplication and a virtual tape solution when the technologies were integrated with NetBackup; otherwise it simply means we have yet more hardware to manage. With the NetBackup 5000 Series appliances, that straightforward, turn-key integration has arrived."
– Terry Fenn, Implementation Design Manager, Xchanging
"By standardizing on Symantec across the storage infrastructure, the PPA is able to provide hundreds of thousands of citizens across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with fast and reliable pension services. The PPA itself also benefits from a significantly lower total cost of ownership, coupled with reduced capital and operational expenditure."
– Faraj Al-juaid, Network and Operations Manager, Public Pension Agency
