The Symantec Certification Program provides rigorous, objective assessments of Symantec technical expertise through securely proctored, computer-based, exams (based on real-world job tasks). Symantec End Users, Customers, Employees, and Partners. Although each product varies in complexity and depth, all certification exams cover core elements measuring technical knowledge and competency needed to efficiently deploy, configure, utilize, troubleshoot and optimize Symantec solutions.
SCS exams target technical people who have hands-on experience with the product. They might be called technical sales engineers, partner integrators, product engineers, administrators, architects, designers, technical support engineers, or consultants, for example.

Symantec Certification was ranked #1 as the top product vendor cyber security certification in the Certification Magazine IT Security Salary Survey (November 2015). This means that on average, Symantec Certified Security Professionals are paid more than any other security vendor certified professionals. Not only does being Symantec Certified help a customer, partner, or employee in their current jobs, but it will help with future careers resulting in a higher propensity to earn top salaries.
The salary survey specifically resulted in Symantec certifications ranking #3 and #9 of the top security certifications by salary. What’s interesting about Symantec’s ranking in the survey is that first two ranked competitors are vendor-neutral, product-agnostic companies who specialize in IT security training and certification. This survey highlights one reason why people should earn a Symantec certification credential – people value the Symantec Certified brand as the largest IT cyber security company in the world; and, they are getting paid higher salaries as a result of branding themselves as Symantec Certified. Additionally, a recent Symantec Trusted Advisor stated:
"Many of the vendor-neutral security certifications are more theoretical where you can just read a book and take a test. Even if they require hands-on testing, they don’t measure applied on the job skills like a Symantec certification requires. My past two companies needed re-architecture and specific help and expertise for their Symantec product environments. Being Symantec Certified pulled more weight with the customer and opened more doors. And, when employers can promote they have a Symantec Certified expert on staff, it helps them win bids and get contracts."
Here are a couple highlights from the article:
“Recent estimates project that, by 2019, there will be more than 1.5 million unfilled IT security jobs worldwide.”
“Certification offers a nice double benefit here: Rapid and comprehensive training for aspiring security professionals, and reassurance for hiring managers who want to pay a lot of money to the right person, with the right skills and knowledge.”
Did you know that 76% of candidates and recruiters verified that Symantec Certification was discussed as part of the hiring process? Passing scores vary by exam. However, all new exams released after the end of 2016 will have a passing score of 70%. You, Symantec, and anybody you publish credentials to from CertTracker.
No. Symantec maintains this policy to ensure security over the exam questions.

If you do not pass an exam on your second attempt, then you must wait at least 2 weeks (14 days) between each additional attempt. If you need to retake an exam that you have already passed in order to fulfill a certification track requirement, you may do so after 3 months. The SCS exam fee will be $250 USD (or the country currency equivalent) regardless of the number of exam attempts.

Exams are developed for the current version of the Symantec product release at the time of development. Exams may be updated after significant new versions are released. New exams may not always correspond to the software release schedule.
Symantec does not provide practice or sample exams. In some cases, an exam's study guide may contain a few sample questions that a test taker could review prior to an exam in order to gain a better understanding of the types of questions asked on the exam.
Symantec regularly conducts statistical analyses of certification exam results for exam maintenance purposes. In doing so, Symantec may publish a range of questions per exam to account for “unscored” questions. In order to ensure the value of the Symantec certification program, Symantec routinely updates exams with new questions on an unannounced basis. Those new questions are initially delivered as “unscored” so that Symantec can evaluate the performance in the field/on the released exam. The “unscored” questions do not count towards your passing score and additional time is already incorporated into the total exam duration to answer these questions.
Symantec reserves the right to regularly update exam questions where the actual number of questions per exam may vary from time to time as these unannounced updates occur.
Symantec end users, both internally and in the field, are studied to define the job performance requirements. The results determine the minimum level of competence required for the defined job performance and is tested in the exams. Symantec follows industry standards for “high stakes” exam development.
Although it is intuitive to think that an appropriate passing score for an examination should be 70 or 75 percent correct based on personal experiences taking classroom tests, these arbitrary values may not reflect the performance level expected of the “minimally qualified candidate” given the difficulty of the test. For example, if the examination is very easy, a passing score of 70 may be too low. However, if the examination is very difficult, this same value may be too high.
Establishing passing scores requires the application of systematic procedures that consider the defined performance level definition of the “minimally qualified candidate” and the difficulty of the examination. Before the final passing scores are established, they are evaluated to ensure that the available validity evidence supports their use for the intended purpose of distinguishing the “minimally qualified candidates” from those who are not yet qualified. This systematic method is used to establish and maintain the fairness, validity and reliability of exams.
In order to ensure the value of the Symantec certification program, Symantec routinely updates exams with new questions. In these cases the passing percentage could change per exam from time to time as these unannounced updates occur.
Symantec exams will be replaced by a newer product version of the exam as technology and trends continue to evolve. Legacy exams will be retired 60 days after a newer version of the exam is released. For example, once the DLP 14.5 exam was released, candidates had 60 days to take the previous version of the exam, in this case, DLP 12, before it was phased out and retired. Retirement dates for legacy exams are also noted in the list of available exams.
Starting in October/November 2017, newly released SCS exam credentials will reference exam versus product versions and they will expire after 24-months from the date achieved. After 24-months candidates may have the option to complete Symantec eLearning continuing education in order to extend their existing SCS credential for 12-months (i.e., a candidate can hold an active SCS credential for a total of 36-months from the date achieved). Or, candidates will have the option to pass a newer version of an SCS exam and remain valid for 24-months from the date achieved.
When certification verification is required, Symantec will identify if a candidate has an active certified status or if they are expired, thus distinguishing between those who have upgraded certifications and those who haven't. Legacy product-version exams will remain valid forever. Symantec highly recommends recertification to remain current with Symantec technology and trends. View the listing of current Symantec Certified Specialist exams and legacy exams.
Candidates are responsible for keeping their certification valid. Symantec will make reasonable efforts to personally update candidates via email about new exams and exams that are being retired.
In most cases, to become a Symantec Certified Specialist (SCS), only one exam is required. Certification requirements, sample exams, exam objectives, study guides, recommended training, and registration is available for each certification and corresponding exam. For more information on specific certifications in each category, please see the certification exam details.
Once Symantec has received your exam results, your PDF certificate will be emailed to you within 2 or 3 days. It is sent to the email address provided by the candidate in their CertTracker account. You can verify and update your preferred email address in CertTracker.
The welcome email for Symantec exams contains an official certificate and access to a Symantec Certified Specialist (SCS) logo for placement on personal business cards.
Symantec Certified Specialist (SCS) Certifications have no expiration date. The no-expiration policy means that the value of legacy Symantec SCS Certifications will be based on how relevant the certification’s competencies are to the IT marketplace. This means that Symantec SCS Certifications, regardless of the associated product versions, will continue to hold their value in the marketplace as long as there is a demand from the industry. When certification verification is required, Symantec will identify product version, thus distinguishing between those who have upgraded certifications and those who haven’t. Symantec highly recommends recertification to remain current with Symantec technology and trends.
You can verify your credentials to any email address by logging in to CertTracker and selecting the “Publish Credentials” option. Although we provide electronic certificates and the ability for a successful candidate to print a copy of that certificate, we stress that the only true verification of certification credentials comes from a certified individual securely publishing their credential directly to the interested party (i.e., manager, recruiter) through this method.
