The Future of Security
How do you stop a motivated attacker who has unlimited resources from compromising your enterprise’s most critical data and services? Not by deploying 50 stand-alone security products and hiring a stable of expensive experts to monitor each of them. That approach doesn’t scale, it has too many blind spots, and it is way too expensive. So what’s the solution? Let’s look into the future and see.

NIST Cybersecurity Framework

On February 12th, the White House and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released the Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity. The Framework is not your traditional government document, but rather a five-layered model that contains a set of standards, methodologies, procedures, and processes that’s intended to align policy, business, and technological approaches to address cybersecurity risks. It’s a helpful tool that will allow you to assess and improve your existing cybersecurity program or build one from scratch, depending on your needs.
Symantec was an active member of the partnership of organizations that developed the Framework and in fact, we are already using it. We are doing so because it is built on a structure that places an emphasis on flexibility and avoids a "check-the-box" approach to security; it focuses on the security outcome, not the specific steps you take to get there. This feature is particularly important because every business, no matter the size, has unique systems and different security needs. Thus, the Framework allows organizations to diversify how they implement the Framework in various situations, and emphasize that effective cybersecurity requires protection policies that are continuously assessed and improved. The threat landscape is evolving quickly, so cybersecurity must evolve quickly as well.
