Description

Linux Kernel is prone to multiple heap-based buffer-overflow vulnerabilities because it fails to properly bounds-check user-supplied data before copying it into an insufficiently sized buffer. Attackers can exploit these issues to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected application. Failed exploit attempts will likely cause a denial-of-service condition.

Recommendations

Run all software as a nonprivileged user with minimal access rights.
To reduce the impact of latent vulnerabilities, always run nonadministrative software as an unprivileged user with minimal access rights.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.
Deploy NIDS to detect and block attacks and anomalous activity such as requests containing suspicious URI sequences. Since the webserver may log such requests, review its logs regularly.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.
Various memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker's ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.
