W32.Gaobot.DX is a worm that spreads through open network shares, IRC, and Windows vulnerabilities. The worm also acts as a backdoor server program and attacks other systems. The worm kills the processes of many anti-virus and security applications.

Discovered: May 18, 2004
Updated: July 07, 2004 7:16:56 PM
Systems Affected: Windows

W32.Gaobot.DX is a network worm that spreads through open network shares, IRC, and by exploiting the Microsoft Windows DCOM RPC Interface Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (BID 8205) and the Microsoft Windows Locator Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (BID 6666).

When executed, the worm copies itself to %System%\svchos1.exe (72,192 bytes).

The worm then creates the following registry entries so that it executes whenever Windows starts:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Configuration Loading = svchos1.exe
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\Configuration Loading = svchos1.exe

The worm also registers itself as a service with the following attributes:
Service Name: Configuration Loading
Display Name: Configuration Loading
Path to executable: "C:\%System%\svchos1.exe" -service
Startup Type: Automatic
First Failure: Restart the Service
Second Failure: Restart the Service
Subsequent Failure: Restart the Service
Reset Fail Count After: 49710 days
Restart Service After: 0 minutes

In order to copy itself to network shares, the worm attempts to enumerate remote administrative SMB shares. The worm attempts to authenticate to the discovered shared folders using the following usernames and passwords:

The worm also attempts copies itself by scanning random IP addresses on:
TCP port 135 to exploit the Microsoft Windows DCOM RPC Interface Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (BID 8205)
TCP port 445 to exploit the Microsoft Windows Locator Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (BID 6666)

The back door component connects to a remote IRC server and allows the attacker to perform some of the following actions on the compromised system:
Manage the installation of the worm
Dynamically update the installed worm
Download and execute files
Steal a compromised system's information
Send the worm to other IRC users
Add accounts for the hacker
Perform denial of service attacks via Ping, TCP SYN, and UDP floods

The worm will also attempt to terminate the processes of following antivirus and security applications:
