Discovered: August 17, 2004
Updated: August 17, 2004 11:09:34 AM
Systems Affected: Windows

W32.Beagle.AP@mm is a mass mailing worm that uses its own SMTP engine to propagate.

When the worm is executed it copies itself as the following files to the Windows System folder, some of which may be zipped copies:

drvddll.exe
drvddll.exeopen
drvddll.exeopenopen
drvddll.exeopenopenopen

It also creates the following registry entry to ensure the worm starts when Windows starts:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
drvddll.exe = "%System%\drvddll.exe"

It may then present the user with the following fake error message:
Error
Can't find a viewer associated with the file

The worm then attempts to terminate the following processes:

The worm opens a back door on the system, listening on a random port. The back door will give the remote user the ability to:
Download and execute a file on the system
Update the malware
Uninstall the malware
