HTTP MS Word RTF Malformed Code Exec

Severity: High

This attack could pose a serious security threat. You should take immediate action to stop any damage or prevent further damage from happening.

Description

This signature detects an attempt to exploit a code execution vulnerability in MS Word.

Additional Information

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft Office handles specially crafted Rich Text Format (RTF) files. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a RTF file with specially crafted control words in Word or previews a RTF file with specially crafted control words in rich text e-mail. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take control of an affected system in the context of the currently logged-on user. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

To view this vulnerability as a standard entry in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures list, see CVE-2008-4027.
