OS Attack: Microsoft SMB MS17-010 Disclosure Attempt

Severity: High

This attack could pose a serious security threat. You should take immediate action to stop any damage or prevent further damage from happening.

Description

This signature detects attempts to exploit a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Windows SMB Service.

Additional Information

Microsoft Windows is prone to a remote code-execution vulnerability because it fails to properly handle the SMB server requests. Specifically, this issue occurs due to an error in the Microsoft Server Message Block 1.0 (SMBv1) Server. An attacker can exploit this issue using a specifically crafted SMB packets sent to the SMBv1 server to execute code.

Note: To successfully exploit this issue, an attacker would need to negotiate a connection to SMBv1 as a part of the attack.

Successful exploits will allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system. Failed attacks will cause denial of service conditions.
