IRQ (interrupt request)

The means that a connection device uses to signal other hardware components that it needs attention. When you install new devices (such as serial ports, modems, and mouse devices), you may find that previous devices no longer work because the new devices are using the previously used IRQs. Also called hardware interrupts.
