NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol)

An open standard protocol that is used to control the data backup and the recovery communications between primary and secondary storage in a heterogeneous network environment. NDMP specifies a common architecture for the backup of network file servers. It enables the creation of a common agent which a centralized program can use to back up the data on file servers that run on different platforms.
