Symantec Workspace Streaming agents have an unquoted search path in the AppMgrService.exe which is installed as a service. This could potentially provide a non-privileged local user the ability to successfully insert arbitrary code in the root path.

Symantec was notified of an unquoted search path issue impacting Symantec Workspace Streaming 6.1.x/7.5.x agents where the AppMgrService.exe is installed as a service. This could potentially allow an authorized, but non-privileged, local user to execute arbitrary code with local system privileges on a client. A successful attempt would require the local user to be able to insert their code in the system root path undetected by the OS or other security applications where it could potentially be executed during application startup or reboot. If successful, the local user’s code would execute as local system on the client system.

Symantec Response

Symantec engineers verified this issue and have resolved it in Symantec Workspace Streaming hotfixes SWS 7.5SP1 HF4 and SWS 6.1SP8MP2 HF7.

Symantec is not aware of exploitation of or adverse customer impact from this issue.

Update Information

Update to hotfixes SWS 7.5 SP1 HF4 and SWS 6.1 SP8 MP2 HF7 will be available through Symantec File Connect. Customers should apply these hotfixes to their currently installed release or migrate to Symantec Workspace Streaming 7.6 when available to avoid potential incidents of this nature.

Best Practices
Symantec strongly recommends as part of normal best practices:

  • Restrict access to administration or management systems to privileged users.
  • Restrict remote access, if required, to trusted/authorized systems only.
  • Run under the principle of least privilege where possible to limit the impact of exploit by threats.
  • Keep all operating systems and applications updated with the latest vendor patches.
  • Follow a multi-layered approach to security. Run both firewall and anti-malware applications, at a minimum, to provide multiple points of detection and protection to both inbound and outbound threats.
  • Deploy network and host-based intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may aid in detection of attacks or malicious activity related to exploitation of latent ulnerabilities.
