  • 1.  Migrating SMG to different environment

    Hello,

We are currently running Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment. We have one VM running both Control Center and Scanner. We are planning to migrate/reinstall/whatever Symantec Messaging Gateway on our new VMware vSphere 6.0 U1a based environment. This is our planned migration procedure.

    1. Take backup of Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment through SMG web interface. Download that backup locally.
    2. Shutdown Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment and create VMware snapshot.
    3. Turn on Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment and upgrade it to 10.5.4-4.
    4. After successfull upgrade to version 10.5.4-4, upgrade Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.4-4 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment to 10.6.0-7.
    5. Take backup of Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.6.0-7 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment through SMG web interface. Download that backup locally.
    6. Prepare new VM for SMG on our new VMware vSphere 6.0 U1a based environment using SMG 10.6.0-5 OSRestore iso and upgrade it to 10.6.0-7.
    7. Restore backup from upgraded SMG 10.6.0-7 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 environment to new SMG VM with 10.6.0-7 on our new VMware vSphere 6.0 U1a enviroment.

    My questions is:
Since there is no 10.6.0-7 OSRestore image available at this moment, I need to prepare new VM with 10.6.0-5 and upgrade it to 10.6.0-7. To do that I need to configure its network settings. Those network settings need to be different than those on our current production VM. After I do restore in step 7, will network settings from backup take over or not? Are there network settings / device name in backup? If not, will it be enough to go through procedure described in http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/change-ip-address-smg-control-center or I will need to do something else? I've done a test restore and one step of restoring from different appliance described in SMG online help is to disable and enable host in Administration/Hosts/Configuration to restore scanner settings. Since our VM serves as both Control Center and Scanner, when disabling host I receive message that host running Control Center cannot be disabled. Could that be the reason network settings and device name end up not being restored?

    Best regards, MSMSMS

For the 10.6.0-7 OSRestore , normally you can try to open a support case and request Symantec to upload .iso for you.

We have done few upgrade and the fallback plan require old images which is not available at Fileconnect, definitely require some helping hand from them...
