From this page

From this page http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-SAVCE.html is states:

"Symantec Antivirus 9.x will reach its End of Support Life as of March 31, 2009. Virus definition updates for version 9.x will be discontinued on April 1, 2009.Symantec Antivirus 9.x will reach its End of Support Life as of March 31, 2009. Virus definition updates for version 9.x will be discontinued on April 1, 2009."

But People are still receiving deefinitons on Version 9. I beleive definition won't stop its just that it wont be tested and product updates won't be released, and ofcourse Symantec won't support this version for any troubleshooting.

That's odd...

That's odd.  Why does the link from Kali's reply (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/release_details.jsp?pid=51852) not show end of support life dates for SAV 10.0, 10.1, 10.2?

Definitions for SAV 9

Actually, as I understand it, definitions for SAV 9 are no longer provided.  Anyone still running SAV 9 should not see definitions update beyond 1 April 2009.

Yes and so is the Model A and

Yes and so is the Model A and DOS 3.3, which I'm still lamenting!
Seriously, a move to Windows 2000 would be good and stable. Several agencies are still running it here and there.
The defs will be around for a while.

Upgrade the OS First !!

Well..I would strictly recommend that first "suggest" the client to upgrade the OS to a later version[May be XP].I understand that the client may have thier own story for sticking to win98..but try to convince them that the win98 is already an outdated OS.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

It's recommend not just because MS has closed the support for win98 3 years back but the fact is there are many hacks  available for win98 which can be used even by a "script kiddie" to "break" into the system and the OS vendor  would not take any responsibilities coz' they've already announced the end of support long back.

Take my words for this, I've seen cases where because of  "one"  missing updated and outdated software the entire network is compromised ! An AV software is at is best when an endpoint meets the "minimum baseline of security".

SAV 10x 9X are personally my favorite choice and Win98 is one of the most "appreciated" OS...but the "security trend" has been changed my friend..and we gotta be "up to date" !
